SEVENTEEN is a South Korean boy group formed by Pledis Entertainment. The group consists of thirteen members: S.Coups, Jeonghan, Joshua, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, DK, Mingyu, The8, Seungkwan, Vernon, and Dino. Throughout their career, they have reached a large audience and become an internationally recognized K-pop group for their signature music and performances.
The group debuted on May 26, 2015, with the extended play (EP) 17 Carat, which became the South Korean project that spent the longest on the Billboard World Albums chart that year, as well as the only project by a debut act to appear on Billboard’s “10 Best K-pop Albums of 2015” list. The EPs FML and Seventeenth Heaven (both released in 2023) set records for the highest pre-order numbers in history, with FML earning the group their first Album of the Year award at the MAMA Awards and becoming the best-selling album of the year according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).
Seventeen is considered a “self-produced idol group”, with all members deeply involved in the composition, production, choreography, and other aspects of their songs and performances. They perform as a single group and are divided into three units—hip-hop, vocal, and performance—each with a different area of specialization. They have been labeled as the “Performance Kings”, “Theater Kids of K-Pop”, and “K-Pop Performance Powerhouse” by various domestic and international media outlets.
Seventeen debuted on May 26, 2015, with a live showcase televised by MBC. They became the first K-pop boy group to debut with a one-hour live showcase on a major broadcast channel, with labelmates Lizzy and Raina of After School serving as MCs. Three days later, their first extended play, 17 Carat, was released digitally along with the music video for its title track “Adore U”. The physical album was released on June 2. The album peaked at number 9 on Billboard’s World Albums chart a week after its release and peaked at number eight, remaining on the chart for a total of eleven weeks. 17 Carat later became the longest-charting album of the year in the US K-pop charts and was the only debut album to appear on Billboard’s “10 Best K-pop Albums of 2015”.
