ENHYPEN is a South Korean boy group formed by Belift Lab, a joint venture between entertainment companies CJ ENM and HYBE Corporation. Formed through the 2020 survival reality show I-Land, the group consists of seven members: Jungwon, Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, and Ni-ki. Enhypen debuted on November 30, 2020, with the extended play (EP) Border: Day One.
The group’s name, Enhypen, was introduced through the live broadcast of the final episode of I-Land. According to etymology, Enhypen derives its name from the hyphen symbol (-), which creates new meanings, including “Connection, Discovery, and Growth.” Similar to how a hyphen connects different words to discover new meanings, Enhypen aims to “come together to connect, discover, and grow together to create a new act.”
In March 2019, Belift Lab was co-created by South Korean entertainment companies CJ ENM and Hybe Corporation, with the intention of forming a new group in 2020. Auditions began that same month in Seoul, the United States, Taiwan, and Japan, among others, seeking male trainees born between 1997 and 2008. On May 8, 2020, Mnet revealed the survival competition program I-Land, a partnership between the two companies that “documents the emergence of K-pop’s next generation artists”. Enhypen was formed from I-Land, starring 23 hopefuls who were undergoing training by Belift Lab and airing weekly on Mnet between June 26 and September 18, 2020, as well as being distributed globally through Hybe Labels’ YouTube channel. The program was divided into two stages. Twelve contestants from the first round advanced to the second part of the series. In the final episode, seven members were selected from the nine finalists, with six being chosen by global voting and one by the producers. The final lineup of the seven members – Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, Jungwon, and Ni-ki – was revealed during the live broadcast of the final episode.

Heeseung
Date of Birth: October 15, 2001
Position: Leader, Main Vocalist, Dancer
Personality: Heeseung is often seen as the “jack of all trades” of the group. He is very talented in both dancing and singing, and is known for his maturity and poise. As the leader, he is responsible for maintaining the harmony of the group, and his natural stage presence charms fans. Heeseung has a calm and caring aura, but he is also very focused and serious when it comes to work.
Jay
Date of Birth: April 20, 2002
Position: Vocalist, Dancer
Personality: Jay is known for his charisma and sharp sense of humor. Despite being older than some of the other members, he has a jovial and playful personality. He is also extremely dedicated to his work, always striving to improve his singing and dancing skills. Jay is very expressive and has an incredible ability to connect with fans during performances, showing all his energy on stage.
Sunghoon
Date of Birth: February 8, 2002
Position: Vocalist, Dancer
Personality: Sunghoon is often described as elegant and sophisticated, both in his appearance and manner. He has an impressive stage presence, and his dance style is very precise and refined. Before debuting as an idol, he was a figure skater, which helps explain his fluid movements and posture. However, he is more shy off stage, showing a quieter and gentler side.
Sunoo
Date of Birth: June 24, 2003
Position: Vocalist
Personality: Sunoo is one of the most outgoing members of the group. He has a charming smile and is known for his positive energy and playful spirit. Despite his bright personality, he also has a remarkable sensitivity, which makes him very loved by fans. Sunoo has a sweet and emotional voice, which gives him a special charm in his performances.
Jungwon
Date of Birth: February 9, 2004
Position: Leader, Main Dancer, Vocalist
Personality: Jungwon is the youngest in the group, but that doesn’t stop him from being highly respected by both the members and the fans. He is a very focused and mature person for his age, always trying to give his best on stage. His leadership is natural, being balanced, caring and also firm when necessary. He has a very strong stage presence, but at the same time he is a bit more introverted in his day to day life.
NI-KI
Date of Birth: February 9, 2005
Position: Main Dancer, Vocalist
Personality: Ni-ki is the “maknae” (youngest member) of the group, but his skill and maturity on stage are surprising for his age. He is an extremely talented dancer, often standing out for his powerful and expressive performances. Off stage, Ni-ki is more reserved, but he has a cute and caring side, especially with the older members. His growth since debut has been remarkable, and he is very dedicated to his fans.
Jake
Date of Birth: November 15, 2002
Position: Vocalist, Dancer
Personality: Jake is well-liked for his bubbly and caring personality. He has a warm presence and is very popular among fans for his friendly and easygoing demeanor. Jake is also very dedicated and has a natural talent for singing. In addition, he has a genuine way of expressing his emotions, which makes him one of the most approachable and friendly members. His connection with fans is strong, and he loves sharing funny and affectionate moments with them.
